Joe Wright School, erected in
1915, at a cost of $21,000, stood on Kickapoo Street. It reached three stories and
housed ten classrooms. Commonly called
“North Side,” it was named in memory of the late husband (a saloon owner) of the land owner.
It became the official high school in 1917 and students attended high school there until a new one was built on Neches in 1925.
The present Joe Wright Elementary
was erected on this site in 1952. It served grades one through six until
Fred Douglass became an intermediate school housing 6th grade students. It is believed that the present auditorium was
part of the first Joe Wright School.
